You call the shots, Artist

Forget the fuss over which paint or brush to choose. The magic's in you, not your gear. This isn't school; it's your studio. You decide what to bring and how to use it.

  • If we don't get super specific on the materials list, it's because it really doesn't matter that much.
  • Quick tip: If you're unsure about how much to bring, more is always better than less.

Drawing stuff

Sketchbook, papers and drawing utensils.

Bring whatever works best for you, keeping in mind that our sketching boards are 45x60cm/18x23”.

  • A sketchbook is a MUST.
  • Bring some assorted papers too.
  • Basic drawing and writing tools: pencils, charcoal, pens, erasers, sharpening blades, etc.
  • Don’t forget clips and masking tape!

Substrates

Essentials

Pre-primed, lightweight surfaces are a must. Options: paper or canvas. If you prefer boards, that's okay but keep in mind they're heavier. Bring a minimum of 20 substrates to last the entire week.

Specifics

  • Highly recommend: A3-size oil/acrylic paper pads.
  • For bigger projects, you should bring a roll of 60cm canvas that need not exceed 150cm in length.

Additional

  • On top of the mandatory 20 substrates, bring an additional oil/acrylic painting pad with 10-12 sheets in it.

Money-Saver Tip: To save on materials and make travel easier, opt for paper pads. Both sides can be used as your works dry.

Painting stuff

Preferred Medium

  • Oil paint is highly recommended for its versatility.
  • Don't forget to bring Liquin -or similar- if you're specifically working with oil paints.

Must-Have Colors

  • White and black are non-negotiable. Bring an extra tube of white paint, as it often runs out.
  • Minimum of five basic colors for your palette.
  • For texture lovers: if you enjoy impasto, pack extra paint.

Brushes

As far as brushes, a healthy variety is best! Soft and hard bristles (be it natural or synthetic) of different shapes (flats, filberts, rounds) and various sizes

In addition, you will need

  • Palette (wooden or disposable)
  • A dipper with a lid
  • Palette knives. Bring more than one.

Specific materials you MUST bring

Your porfolio

Bring images of the works you're most proud of or have fundamental doubts about for your private mentorship sessions. Keep it simple, nothing fancy. You've got two options:

  1. Offline portfolio (pre-downloaded to your tablet or laptop).
  2. Printed portfolio.

Personal project

Prepare a personal project to be developed in a single day. You'll need to bring PRINTED OUT ON PAPER, the following materials:

  • A short write-up on what you wish to paint, how you're going to do it, and why you want to paint it. Detail the emotions, intuitions, and sensations driving you to create it.
  • Any necessary references to work on the project, also printed out on paper. This can be anything from photographs, masterpieces by great artists, film stills, or even poems... Whatever you'll be using for inspiration.
  • Again: all printed on paper.
  • Also, super important! Bring an amazing attitude 😊

What you must NOT bring

This is the list of materials we provide. These are the materials that you should NOT bring. If you have any questions about materials, let us know.

  • Easel
  • Sketch board 45x60cm / 18x23”
  • Brush washer
  • Gamsol
  • Paper towels
  • Charcoal fixative

Recommended supplies

Some extra stuff you might want to consider. October weather in Menorca is all over the place. We suggest packing a raincoat, a hat, some sunscreen, and bug repellent.

  • A hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug repellent
  • Light raincoat
  • Digital Camera: smartphones may not be a substitute, and are prohibited on the island.
  • Bring a varied assortment of tools you're comfortable with for manipulating paint (rollers, different types of spatulas, sponges, etc.).
  • Plein air pochade box, if possible. We provide a French easel, but it's better if you bring whatever works best for you for plein air painting.
